Technology Talks - Soon you may not need your phone to use WhatsApp

Boasting over one billion users, the Facebook owned WhatsApp is arguably the most popular chat application out there. Although WhatsApp can be accessed on PC through a web client running in the browser, it's largely used on smartphones only.

However, you could soon be able to use all of WhatsApp's features (e.g. text messaging, file sharing) from your PC. Information has surfaced online suggesting that WhatsApp might be working on a full-fledged desktop application for Windows and Mac operating systems.

A Twitter account (not affiliated with WhatsApp) tracking changes in WhatsApp's beta builds recently tweeted images having references to WhatsApp's desktop application being developed for the desktop.

Even though it's possible to use WhatsApp on PC through your browser, it's a very limited and inconvenient method. To use WhatsApp's web client, your phone should be connected to the Internet. Moreover, this method requires the browser to always remain open.

A full-fledged desktop application could make it possible to use WhatsApp's important features like document sharing and voice calls without requiring the smartphone to be connected to the Internet all the time. It would also remove the need for having a browser window open at all times.

WhatsApp will be soon rolling out new features such as voice mail and the ability to share zip files for iOS and Android users. The instant messaging service was also in the news recently on account of being temporarily banned in Brazil.
