Tata Altroz has achieved a five-star safety rating in the adult occupant protection category at the Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) crash tests. Scheduled to be launched in India on January 22, the premium hatchback is based on the ALFA (Agile Light Flexible Advanced) architecture and comes with standard safety features like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and CSC, reverse parking sensors, ISOFIX, driver and co-driver seatbelt reminder and high-speed alert system. The entry-level model of the Altroz was chosen for the tests.

In its report, the agency noted that the structure and footwell area of Tata Altroz were rated as stable. "Head and neck protection for adult occupants was good. Chest protection for both adults was adequate," it said.

In the child occupant protection category, the upcoming Tata Altroz scored three stars. "Child occupant protection showed good protection for the 18-month-old dummy with the CRS (child restraint system) installed rearward facing and using the standard ISOFIX anchorages. The 3-year-old CRS was installed forward-facing, the backrest of the seat unlatched during the crash due to the load of the top tether, which was a reason for a score reduction," Global NCAP said.

Tata Altroz is available in five variants -- XE, XM, XT, XZ and XZ(O). It gets features like dual chamber projector headlamps with LED DRLs, split taillamps, piano black ORVM, black contrasting roof, 16-inch laser cut alloy wheels, 7-inch TFT digital instrument cluster, 7-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system, multifunction steering wheel, fully automatic AC and cruise control.

There are two BS6-compliant engines available with the Altroz. The petrol option is a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, Revotron mill that makes 86 PS and 113 Nm of torque, while the diesel option is a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, Revotorq turbo diesel powertrain that generates 90 PS and 200 Nm of torque. Both the engines get a standard 5-speed manual gearbox.

Tata Altroz gets five colour options -- High-Street Gold, Skyline Silver, Downtown Red, Midtown Grey and Avenue White. It will challenge the likes of Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20 and Honda Jazz. We are expecting the Altroz to be priced in the range of Rs 5.50 lakh (ex-showroom) and Rs 8.50 lakh (ex-showroom).
