Tata Altroz has achieved a five-star safety rating in the adult occupant protection category at the Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) crash tests. Scheduled to be launched in India on January 22, the premium hatchback is based on the ALFA (Agile Light Flexible Advanced) architecture and comes with standard safety features like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and CSC, reverse parking sensors, ISOFIX, driver and co-driver seatbelt reminder and high-speed alert system. In the child occupant protection category, the upcoming Tata Altroz scored three stars. "Child occupant protection showed good protection for the 18-month-old dummy with the CRS (child restraint system) installed rearward facing and using the standard ISOFIX anchorages. The 3-year-old CRS was installed forward-facing, the backrest of the seat unlatched during the crash due to the load of the top tether, which was a reason for a score reduction," Global NCAP said.

Swift Tops Segment Sales, Triber More Popular Than Fords In September 2019

Swift Tops Segment Sales, Triber More Popular Than Fords In September 2019

Ford-Figo-Hyundai-Grand-i10-Nios-Maruti-Suzuki-Swift-Renault-Triber-Ford-Freestyle-market-reviews-indian-cars-auto-news-lifesaystechnology-technology-talks

The month-on-month figures for this segment recover with the addition of a new contender

  1. Swift still the most popular mid-size hatchback offering.
  2. Grand i10 and Nios combined are a comfortable second but still do not make the 10,000-mark.
  3. New Triber sold over 4,700 units as the third most popular offering.
  4. Ford Figo shipped less than a 1,000 units but saw a 5 per cent month-on-month growth.
  5. Freestyle sales dropped to less than 500 this month—34 per cent drop in MoM demand.
The mid-size hatchback segment in the Indian automotive scene has managed to witness some positive month-on-month results in terms of demand last month. This can be attributed primarily to the newest crossover offering, the Renault Triber, whose pricing and target market bring it into this segment. Meanwhile, the Swift continues to lead this segment by quite a margin despite the drop in year-on-year sales.

Let’s take a look at how each of the contenders in this segment performed in terms of demand in September 2019:

Ford-Figo-Hyundai-Grand-i10-Nios-Maruti-Suzuki-Swift-Renault-Triber-Ford-Freestyle-market-reviews-indian-cars-auto-news-lifesaystechnology-technology-talks

Ford Figo: The Figo hatchback saw its month-on-month numbers grow by over 5 per cent. It has also significantly increased its market share since the facelift as compared to where it stood in the segment last year.

Hyundai Grand i10 and Nios: Hyundai still has the pre-facelift Grand i10 listed on sale alongside the Nios and their sales numbers continued to be clubbed together. As a whole, the demand for the Hyundai mid-size hatchback has stayed the same—both in terms of month-on-month sales and year-on-year market share.

Maruti Suzuki Swift: Still dominating the hatchback segment, the Swift sold close to 13,000 units in September 2019—almost a 4 per cent month-on-month growth. However, the Swift does not occupy as much of this segment as it used to, as the year-on-year market share has dropped by over 16 per cent. Its numbers have dropped significantly during the automotive slowdown, indicated by the average sales of well over 14,000 units a month.

Renault Triber: The latest addition to the segment is one that doesn’t quite fit in. The Renault Triber is a sub-4m MPV crossover with seating for up to 7, unlike the 5-seater hatchbacks that it’s competing with. But its pricing brings it into contention with them and offers a ridiculous amount of luggage space if used as a 5-seater. It’s already close to 5,000 monthly units, making it the third most popular offering, far more popular than the Fords.

Ford Freestyle: The Freestyle remains the least popular offering in the segment and it was also the biggest loser in September. Its month-on-month sales dropped by over 34 per cent with less than 500 units shipped.

Maruti Suzuki stops production of Ritz car

02:33:00

Even Auto Market leader made some "fiasco" & named it as 'Ritz'

RIP Ritz  Maruti Suzuki stops production of Ritz

However, the company declined to comment on the production halt of Ritz.

HIGHLIGHTS >>>>

- Maruti Suzuki reported zero production of Ritz in the last two months. Sources suggest that the car will be replaced by upcoming vehicle Ignis

- Ritz was launched in 2009

- On an average, the company sold 2500-3000 units of Ritz per month

NEW DELHI: India's largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has stopped production of its compact hatchback Ritz, sources close to the development told ETAuto. The company also reported zero production of Ritz in the last two months according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers' data. Sources also suggest that the car will be replaced by upcoming vehicle Ignis+ which is a compact crossover.

According to an industry source MSIL wanted to stop the production in February 2016 but the carmaker went on to produce 28,000 units more.

On the other side, the sales of the compact hatchback have not been able to match the performance of its siblings like Swift and Celerio.

Maruti Suzuki sold 3038, 2515 and 5 units of Ritz in the months of August, September and October, respectively. Looking at the production and sales of the compact hatchback, is Maruti Suzuki Ritz coming to an end in the Indian car market?

However, the company declined to comment on the production halt of Ritz.
Launched in 2009, Ritz has not been very successful in the Indian market. The carmaker updated the model only once in the product's complete life cycle of seven years.
On an average, the company sold 2500-3000 units of Ritz per month, which was very low when compared to other models of the company.

Industry experts believe that the carmaker has been able to launch successful products which are already facing the production constraint. So, it would be better for the company to remove the low performing models and produce popular models as the OEM has limited production facility.

Experts also point out the fact that on an average, any product doesn't have a lifecycle of more than 2-3 years.

Kaushik Madhavan, Director - Automotive & Transportation, MENASA at Frost & Sullivan said, "There are primarily 2 areas of benefit as a result of stopping Ritz production. a)This will help MSIL shift production capacity towards new models+ which are in higher demand, like Brezza, Baleno and so on. b) Focusing on Ignis will give MSIL the opportunity to prepare towards the impending BS VI, India NCAP and CAFE regulations . MSIL can bring in more modern, efficient and safety compliant technologies.

At present, Maruti Suzuki can produce 1.5 million units annually from its existing plants in Manesar and Gurgaon. However, the carmaker is coming up with a new plant in Gujarat which will further add 1.5 million units to the current production capacity that can provide some relief to the carmaker. The parent company, Suzuki has invested Rs 8,500 crore to set-up the new facility in Gujarat.

Due to production constraint in the past, the carmaker postponed the launch of its compact crossover Ignis to next year+ . Ignis was supposed to be launched during the festive season this year.

Some experts also believe that the company is also preparing for new launches which are planned for next year. So, to meet the demand of the existing and upcoming models the carmaker may let go with low performing old models.

Maruti Suzuki is planning to bring Ignis, Baleno RS+ and facelift of Swift siblings, which are expected to do well, in 2017.
